The popular puzzle game from The New York Times, Connections, has sparked outrage over one category that was assumed to be easy but turned out to be a trick. For those who are unaware, this addictive game challenges players to arrange a grid of 16 words into four groups of four by uncovering the connections between them. Categories can range from aisles in a grocery store to television networks, making it both engaging and challenging.

Each group of connections is color-coded based on difficulty levels. The yellow group is the easiest, while blue and green represent medium difficulty. The purple group is typically the hardest, adding an extra layer of challenge to the gameplay experience.

However, players only have four attempts to make each connection. If a guess is incorrect, they lose a life. Yet, if they're close to the correct group, a message will appear on the screen indicating that they are just one word away from getting the right pairing. This feature keeps players on their toes and engaged in the game.

On Monday, February 19, the game stumped many players with the words: tinder, bumble, grinder, and hinge, which everyone assumed were names of dating apps. However, when players went to submit their answers, they were disappointed to discover that those words did not form a category.

Many took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and TikTok to express their frustrations about why that category was not a valid option. One TikTok video, which garnered over 300,000 views, highlighted the words with the text, "Connections, what do you mean this was wrong…"

Viewers resonated with the TikToker's frustrations. Comments included, “You know it’s messed up when I got the purple category FIRST for today’s connections (02.19) LIKE HOW,” showcasing the disbelief many felt after the game.

Another player remarked, “Me. But I put match cause Grindr doesn’t have an e. I thought I was smart with that too.” Others echoed similar sentiments on X, indicating their thoughts were too good to be true but felt compelled to try it anyway.

One tweet read, “NYT Connections baited me with the dating apps red herring.” Another user pointed out that having words like tinder, bumble, hinge, and grinder not be the theme is “criminal.”

A similar situation occurred earlier this month on February 7, when the game featured the words: “Sponge,” “Bob,” “Square,” and “Pants.” Although these words referenced the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants, players were frustrated that this grouping was not a valid answer in the puzzle.

Players took to X again to share their reactions to that particular puzzle. One person posted, “I am not charmed by this,” along with a screenshot of the grouping, “Sponge Bob Square Pants.”

Another user humorously remarked, “NYT Connections said, ‘Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?’” while others shared their thoughts, such as, “NYT Connections you will pay for your goofy crimes,” and “NYT Connections paying respect to a legend.”
